Twitter is my bad news delivery device. This morning it informed me that the beautiful B-17 bomber, the Liberty Belle, crashed and burned outside Chicago. I had the great pleasure of flying on the LB in spring of ’07 when I was working for the Banner Herald newspaper. I went up on a media flight, took some pictures and conked my head during some turbulence. It was a truly beautiful aircraft and a part of aviation history. I’m just glad to hear that all aboard this morning made it out alive.
This is Joe Walters, 93 at the time he was photographed. The day we went up in the Liberty Belle was the first time he had stepped foot inside a B-17 since the one he flew in as a ball-turret gunner was shot down over occupied Belgium in August 1943. I love history.
