A lot of folks didn’t know about Huma Abedin before her husband, Rep. Anthony Weiner’s recent scandal. I first encountered her on the campaign trail in 2008. She was Clinton’s right-hand-woman and still is. To work in such a capacity for a person with that schedule and intellect requires a level of skill, grace and intelligence I doubt most people can fathom. To top it all off, Huma is a very beautiful woman who has appeared in the pages of Vogue, fitting in quite well with the professionally good-looking people.
I photographed her last fall for Time Magazine’s 40-under-40 feature. She was a delight as a portrait subject. The specs of the assignment called for a full-length white seamless shot. Something in the back of my mind told me Ms. Abedin was likely to keep showing up in the news so, after I had my full-length shot, I continued to take pictures which varied in scale and tone. This is something that I do by default when I’m shooting an environmental portrait, but not something I always think of when doing studio work. I’m thankful Ms. Abedin let me continue to photograph her. While she does have a megawatt smile, she also possesses an air of drama reminiscent of old Hollywood.
Life has thrown Huma some serious curveballs recently and I wish her all the best with her pregnancy, marriage and career.
