I’ve relocated back to Washington DC, but this East Coast heatwave has me waxing nostalgic for the mild California winter I enjoyed this year. I spent a number of afternoons hiking Runyon Canyon, just a few blocks from my apartment. One day, I got a late start on my hike and came around the final bend as the sun was getting low in the sky. In true photographer fashion, I got unreasonably excited when I saw my fellow hikers passing through a really fabulous shaft of light that isolated them perfectly from the background. I spent the next few days going back to that spot at the right time to do a little portrait series on the hikers of Runyon. I call the series Runyon Sunset Voyeur because while I could see the subjects, they were unable to see me photographing them because I was backlit by the sun. Check out the full series on my website.

One of the few times when breaking the rules i.e. never shoot with the sun behind you works really well. A great series of images and thanks for sharing Melissa.
Great series, even better stuff on your site, really simple yet smart idea!
